Road Trip Day Four

 8/13/2012
It smells wonderful in nature.  Camping alone is a new experience for me.  I must admit I was a bit frightened last night.  I couldn't sleep well either.  The wind would pick up every so often, and it would start sprinkling, lightening, and thundering.   I ended up climbing into my car to sleep.  Then at 6am I crawled back into the tent to sleep again.  I hit the trails at about 8:30 am, and rode them for about 2 hours.  I had my first ever big wipe out!  It rocked!  Haha.  I'm pretty sure I'll have a big bruise on my ass tomorrow.  In a split second I felt the bike lurch forward, saw the front tire spinning in the dirt, and turned to see the back tire doing nothing just as my bike turned on its side; with me on it.  Clip shoes/pedals have so many great benefits, but this is not one of them.  With shoes clasped to the pedals I fell hard and fast.  It was easy to laugh at myself as I stood up to brush the mud/dirt from my back side.  Many of the maps on the trail had been stolen, so I got lost a couple of times.  It was a thrill though.  I just kept an eye on my water supply.  I knew the trails weren't long at this park, so I couldn't get too lost.  It was definitely a new adventure.  Trails where I live are paved; at least the ones I  am aware of.  These were made of mud, dirt, and ruts.  The trails were covered in debris from the trees, and roots were growing up along the paths in many places.  Sometimes even whole trees could be seen lying near or across the trails.  It was heavenly.  A 2 hour bike ride through nature, and I felt so energetic and alive when I finished!
After my ride I packed up and headed towards Memphis, TN.  I passed through Memphis, then Nashville, before arriving late in Chattanooga, TN.  Once there I met up with another new friend (thanks Skout!) at the Fox and Hound to get acquainted over a drink.  I told him all about my journey, we talked about our kids, our goals, and our travels.  It was a short meet-up, but a good one.
So this trip has been spontaneous and unplanned for the most part.  Some details or parts of the trip have been commitments, but much of it has spurred from research along the way.  Because it is so late, I decided to crash at a hotel.  The man at the front desk gives me my room key, and I set out for my room.  I slid the key, opened the door, and I startled when the door slammed into something sitting behind it.  I peered in to see what could be in the way, and took note of a very large man....sleeping in my bed.
Back at the front desk I explain my dilemma, and I get set up with a newer, and more unoccupied room.  At this point I am just ready to get some real sleep.  My mission starts tomorrow at 5am!
